Accomplishments In our first ten years, we have met the following initial (1998) goals and objectives:

Increase intercultural awareness...
Presentation of pre-Mission training for volunteers
Basic Spanish course for Mission participants
Awareness of possible misunderstanding in translation, sensitivity to accurate expression of mission goals and procedures
Missioners’ visits to Nicaraguan family homes
American teens’ impromptu daily interaction with Nicaraguan school children
Donation of soccer and baseball uniforms and equipment to form local Nicaraguan teams
Construction of 2 swing sets on elementary school grounds
Delivery of hundreds of letters yearly to North American sponsors from sponsored students
Delivery of letters and packages from North American sponsors to Nicaraguan school children
Missioners’ attendance at meetings of Managua Rotary Club International
Missioners’ acceptance of “Sister City” certificate at Managua City council, by Mayor of Managua
Nightly meetings with mission on-site volunteers to reflect on the impact of the day’s happenings
Availability of trained counselors on-site to aid individuals in coping with unusual situations.
Mutual participation in farewell program of music and dance
North American teens’ participation in elementary classrooms, including a 6 week summer internship in teaching English


Promote education...
Sponsorships of over 500 students annually – to obtain education (preschool-university)
Subsidized university students who previously completed high school with MOH sponsorship
Formed and continue to support sewing co-op; seamstresses now make school uniforms
Formed and continue to support computer co-op; regularly donate hardware & software
With cooperation of school administration, taught breast and testicular self-examination to high school students (began 2004)
Assisted in establishing Vocational School to expand offerings on existing school compound (2005 and beyond)
Funded scholarships for vocational study
Contributed to newly formed Adult Education classes (began 2005)


Maintain a working partnership...
Initiation and continuation of Rice and Beans Project (delivery to local homes) during mission trips
Assistance in development of a Local Council in Nicaragua, and frequent meetings with Local Council for project decision-making
Initiation of Children Feeding Children Project (Ninos Alimentando Ninos), which provides 375+ primary school children with a daily hot meal and a multivitamin. Local workers are employed to deliver supplies, prepare and serve meals
Community Development Specific
Building hundreds of home shelters, with most work now assumed by crews of local workers
Repair of 25+ home shelters and roofs
Painting of window grilles at elementary and secondary schools
Construction of a chapel/community center at Monte Verde
Construction of library building to serve local high school
Restoration of 12 classrooms after destruction by Hurricane Mitch (1998)
Replacement of asbestos roofing with approximately 24,000 square feet of metal roofing on preschool, elementary school, sewing co-op, clinic, church.
Painting of 3 preschool, 12 elementary, and 12 high school classrooms
Painting of facade and complete interior of 2 refugee centers – 6000 square feet
Painting of patient rooms and hallways in two wings of Children’s Cancer Hospital
Renovation, expansion and painting of medical clinic
Installation of a covered concrete patio to serve as a waiting area for patients at clinic
Improvement of electrical and plumbing systems at Nino Jesus de Praga school compound
Installation of additional security fencing around perimeter of school compound
Donation of thousands of boxes of clothing and general supplies to villagers
Installation of 12 toilets for school of 1500 children
Formation of a garden project
Establishment of vocational classes: sewing co-op, bakery and mechanic training
Specifically Medical
Reconfiguration/organization/staffing of medical clinic
Arrangement for local physician to keep clinic open two afternoons per week year round in Chiquiistagua, one afternoon a week in Nejapa and one morning a week in Mateare
Examination and/or treatment of over 12,000 individuals in clinic
Transportation and donation of over $400,000 worth of medical equipment, medicines and supplies to Cancer Hospital, Orphanage, Women’s Hospital, Disability Center, Refugee
Centers, as well as to the village and clinic in Chiquilistagua
Distribution of health education and preventive medicines/kits
Financial support of local newborn with Down syndrome
Financial support for education, medical, and counseling for young rape victim
Continuing support of two youngsters: thyroid and seizure medications
Purchase of suction machine to support medical needs of two-year-old tracheotomy victim
Semi-annual conferences with Nicaraguan Ministers of Health who continue to express gratitude and support for Mission of Hope activities continued and donations
Two audiences with Roman Catholic Cardinal, Most. Rev. Miguel y Obando
Personal meeting with Sister Lourdes Colon, Provincial leader of Carmelite Sisters, C.A.
Purchased a commercial clothes dryer for orphanage
Cooperative working relationship with CARITAS
Regular visits to the Children’s Cancer Hospital, Orphanage at El Crucero, Parajito Azul Disability Center, Berta Calderone Women’s Hospital, Mateare Refugee Center, Managua’s Esperanza Women’s Jail
